What flourishing actually looks like

The goal was never the absence of pain. This is the part almost nobody tells survivors is available to them.

Researchers who study wellbeing rather than illness describe much the same handful of ingredients: positive feeling, absorption in something, relationships that hold, a sense of meaning, and the experience of getting somewhere. Alongside these: independence, mastery, growth, and accepting yourself as you are.

You can have hard days and be living well

These are two separate measures, not two ends of one line.

Symptoms can remain while life gets bigger

You are not stuck in the waiting room of your own life.

Purpose often arrives through contribution

Many people find that helping someone else is part of their own recovery.

Some people find that something valuable grows out of what they went through. Many do not, and nobody owes the world growth in exchange for their suffering.
