What good therapy looks like

Some approaches have strong evidence behind them. Others are promising but less well tested. You deserve to know the difference.

First-line, guideline-recommended
for PTSD

Trauma-focused cognitive behavioural therapy • EMDR

Recommended in NICE guidance and in the ISTSS treatment guidelines.

Other approaches many people find
helpful

The evidence base for these is developing and does not carry equivalent guideline status. That does not mean they do not help people — it means the research is thinner, and you should know that before you choose.

For complex trauma, good therapy is paced

Safety and stabilisation first. Processing only when you are steady enough. Then reconnection and meaning. A good therapist will not ask you to describe everything on the first day, and will stop when you need to stop.
